The White Rim Trail
White Rim Map. The White Rim Trail is a ~100 mile long 4WD road. It is basically a loop that follows the contour
of the Island in the Sky plateau. We took two full days to drive it - staying overnight under
the stars at White Crack at the southern-most point. It owes its existence to the Uranium
boom of the 1950's - Canyonlands didn't become a National Park until the early 1960's.

The White Rim Trail is accessed via the Shaffer Trail off the Island in the Sky road just north of the visitor center.

Shafer Switchbacks - the road drops sharply down about 1000 vertical feet to a mesa called the White Rim because of the color of the rock layer at its rim. The Colorado River is about 1000 feet below the White Rim.

East side of the White Rim. The road follows the rim - with the Island in the Sky on the right (1000 ft. up) and the River on the left (1000 ft down).

Monument Basin - Pavement huggers can see this beautiful basin from Grand View Point at the southern end of Island in the Sky. It's just as awesome from up there!

White Crack - At the southern-most point of the loop. The world drops away at your feet and you can see forever.

White Crack - A "Post Card View" everywhere you look.

Our camp at White Crack - just the basics! You just can't see more stars anywhere else in the world...
